Sunflower
12"x16" Watercolor Painting on Arches 300lb Paper
This is a watercolor painting of a very tall sunflower plant in my neighbor's yard in San Diego.
The sunlight was creating interesting patterns in the bright yellow petals, as well as the various shades of green in the leaves.
The sunflower is made with many, many different layers of very thin paint. The contrasting black background was created using 2 layers of paint as thick as whipped cream, on the white paper.
